SongLab Deep Cuts Vol. 04: The Two Lives of a Song

The song is written. Tracks recorded. Mix done. Master finished.
Time to share it with the world.

But first: how do you recreate it live?

So much time was spent preparing it in the studio. Nurturing it. Getting the exact right vocal take.

Finding the exact right sounds. It’s perfect the way it is.

But do you really own the song yet?

Sadly, the answer is no.

Even though you’ve spent all that time perfecting it in the studio, performing it live is something else entirely.

Expect to put in the hours rehearsing it. Whether you’re a solo act or a band, days, sometimes weeks, of repetition. Run the song every day if possible. Rehearse until it’s second nature. No hesitation. No second-guessing.

Then something interesting happens.

New ideas begin to develop.
The song starts to take on a second life.

The studio recording is one thing. Live performance is another. And that’s okay. Who cares if it’s not exactly like the album? The real question is: does the message translate?

That’s the goal.

By repeating the song over and over, day after day, you gain mastery over performing it. And when it’s finally time to step onstage. This is the most important moment, when that feeling hits that you have the audience in the palm of your hand…

You’ve got them.

You can steer them wherever you want.

They’ll sense your confidence. They’ll lock into your message. They’ll follow wherever you lead, because you did the work long before the song ever met the world.

That’s what sets you apart.

Final musings…

A performance so memorable, so undeniable, that people remember it long after the night is over. You’ve gained fans.

And that only comes from preparation. Focus. Putting in the work to bring your music where it needs to be.

That first idea, creating a song, is only the beginning.
